Before radar, Britain tried to hear enemy bombers coming using giant concrete ‘ears’
Source: Times of India — Top Stories · 10 hr ago
Summary
Britain built three large concrete sound‑reflectors on the Kent coast in the late 1920s to detect the noise of incoming enemy bombers and provide early warning. The system, developed after heavy World War I air raids, was led by physicist William Sansome Tucker. Advances in aircraft speed, ambient noise and the introduction of radar rendered the sound mirrors useless by the start of World War II.
